Year 6 Conference

February24

Year 6 challenges

Last Tuesday we had our year 6 conference and it was so much fun, we did so many challenging activities, so, we had to use teamwork a lot. Our school from a different campus came to our campus and it was very nice meeting new people and make new friends. One of the hardest challenges of the day was ‘The Plank Challenge’ because it was really hard communicating with each other when you are struggling and tired, and it’s a bad feeling when you try and push yourself because you think you will let your team down, so, you have got to make sure you tell your teammates that you will always be here for the and they will never let you down.

Another challenge was the newspaper challenge… I was the person handing out the tape and making sure the tower stands up. So what we were given was a roll of tape and newspaper and we had to build th biggest tower out of all he groups. We did well we were top 3 but then we we were seeing who the the tallest tower our tower sadly fell because the bottom wasn’t strong enough we were all upset but I was very proud of what we built till it sadly fell like the twin towers but It wasn’t by accident.

At the start of the day we shared our top 3 personal learner attributes that we think we represented most and that was really funny because we all pretty much said the same thing. I can’t wait till the next year 6 conference if we have one.

Overall Tuesday was so much fun meeting new people and overcoming all the challenges that hit us.

What year are you in? Have you had a year 6 conference before? Any advice for next time?

Wild and dangerous

December5

Sharks

Seventy percent of the Earth’s surface is water and sharks live in the water, so essentially at any given time the commonly feared and dangerous sharks are occupying more physical space than us humankind. So if sharks give you a scare, all I can say is don’t go in the water…

A shark is a mammal that is around 5.8 -7 meters long. It has tapered edges and gradually gets thicker throughout the back of the body. You know their nostril works the same way as ours. Personally I think that a sharks mouth is the scariest I’m not sure if its because that’s the part of the body that would it you or if its because it actually looks scary. Sharks move so fast because of their tail it gives them momentum in the water its like if you don’t have legs you can’t run you just have your arms but that would be a lot worse.

Sharks have the sharpest teeth that I know of. They also have a really big and heavy body that can l reckon split you in have with those sharp fins that they have 8 of!

Did you know that sharks have 8 fins! Sharks don’t like eating people, a common misconception held
by many, they just think that humans are other sources of food, like seals and dolphins (especially when you are wearing a wetsuit). Sharks actually love eating seals, birds and lots of other mammals. If sharks didn’t have gills they would die… because the gills take the very minimal of oxygen out of the water, somehow that is enough for the big shark body to survive, how crazy.

My favourite book chat book this year

December5

See you in the cosmos

My favourite bookchat book this year is called ‘see you in the cosmos’ by Jack Cheng. It is a family and friendship book. It is about this little boy and his dog called Carl Segan who is his all time hero. He makes all these recordings about what it is like on earth and how we live on earth, then he is going to launch his rocket into space and on his adventure he meets someone very special on the way. His mum has some sort of memory loss that he is not aware of till the end of the book and his dad is a mystery. I don’t usually go for books that thick but it hooked me in right from the start and the connections along the way also helped me get more intrigued about this book.

Have you read ‘See You In The Cosmos’?

Year 5 production reflection

December4

Hanging onto the bottom of the world

Doesn’t she just look beautiful Bruce! Oh wait got to explain what’s happening Bruce. It was our Year 5 production last week and after like a billion rehearsals we finally got it clear and polished. All our feedback was positive and our play was about Australian history and I was a shy Tasmanian bride. I learnt how to be shy and embarrassed about everything that happened in those scenes. My character from the other class Sylvie played our part very well and projected her voice really well with good expression. One of the biggest highlights was dressing up into something you wouldn’t usually wear but we all looked be-au-ti-ful.

We learnt a song that didn’t get perfect till the night. All of the cast came from the stairs where the audience were sitting with boats we made in art. As we were in a semi-circle on stage we had to pretend to be dirty and have a hunched back…we were all uncomfortable except for the people that had dialog in the scene. Once we went of I was next a Chinese miner.

When I went on stage as a Chinese miner we came in as a dragon and there was this long speech by the first official and it was about how they admire as and stuff but we can’t let them in. It’s probably because they think we’re re better than them and they think that we will take over Australia. Also when we entered there was red lights flashing and this Chinese music that had no words but it was definitely Chinese dragon music that fit into the play perfectly. The person at the front of the line also had a big mask that you put over your head that was bright and colourful. As we left the stage we all rolled our eyes and groaned like we were grumpy because we were.

The cricket game was amazing! Of course the federationists won but it was a great competition, except for when Henry Parkes and queen Victoria died… that… was… the saddest… moment of all. The cricket game was really intense and it was hard not to laugh when you see your family and friends in the audience. The cricket game turned into a women vote ground, all the brides where holding sign posts and I was holding a sign post saying ‘SPORT’.

Some PLA’s that I used was resilience I forgot my line on the night so I had to keep going and I eventually remembered my line. Some other PLA’s that I used where imagination because I had to imagine what a convict would be like and also why a shy and embarrassed Tasmanian bride would look like. I also think for the play to work you need to collaborate if you have lost a prop or forgot your lines open stage and you need that extra help on stage to jog your memory so you remember where you put that prop or you remember your line.

Have you ever been in a play before?

Toonallook reflection

November21

Last week we went to Toonallook and it was amazing! My favourite part was the boat ride from Raymond island back to Toonallook it was so fun, the guy that drove the speed boat was doing donuts and squiggles in the water, all my friends where laughing and having a great time, some of them got sprayed by the salty water, they were all FIRED UP!

Sleeping was definitely the hardest challenge because I didn’t see my family because I usually see them everyday and I haven’t seen them for a week. It was very hard to get to sleep and some people had some tears but in the morning we all felt refreshed however… the toilets were far away in the dark because you have to be quiet so you don’t wake anyone up but you also have to get rid of your fears of kangaroos.

The first day we were all tired from the big 4 hour bus ride. When we arrived we had lunch and then we went kayaking! I was Isaacs partner we worked really well together. Everyone kayaked to a sand patch then we had a big race back it was very tight between Isaac and I and other people. I was drenched, my arms were sore and couldn’t wait to have a shower. Then we went to dinner, we had burritos they were really tasty after all our showers and after we all got changed we played ‘the shoe game’ the was one of the biggest highlights of all.

When we woke up we were all refreshed and ready to go onto all our activities. We went to the water police boat obviously it wasn’t moving but it was huge! The was 3 levels and got to climb onto the front bonnet. After that we had lunch and went to this camp site to set up our tents for the night. The mosquitos were everywhere I sprayed heaps of aero guard on myself. Later on we had dinner and played empire I lost but it was so much fun.

We all had dinner and had a long sleep so we aren’t tired for the rest of the day. When we woke up we packed up our tents then went to Raymond island… koala spotting was so exciting! We saw 27 koalas they were so peaceful and so close. Then we went fishing, I accidentally killed a jellyfish but I learnt how to fish! When we got of the ferry from Raymond island we went to Toonallook and by that time we were all tired and went to bed. Then we packed up all our luggage’s and went home by the end of the week we were all READY TO GO!

Camp Sovereign hill

August6

Camp at Sovereign hill!

Last week the Year 5s went to Sovereign Hill. We learnt about what life was like on the goldfields and the history about Australia. My group had to collaborate with the challenge that we did on the first day, to try and find the right numbers to the right shops. I think you also had to imagine what life was like on the goldfields and how people used to live in worry about if they would live overnight and the draft of the sewage behind your tent. The first day we went to two mine tours and especially the first mine tour I had to use Courage because it felt very claustrophobic because it was 52 stairs down and 53 stairs up.

My favourite part was getting dressed up in the 1850s clothes but in saying that they were very uncomfortable and I don’t know how we used to wear that uniform 24/7. It was also interesting to see what the girls and boys used to wear and how they dressed everyday. Let’s just say they wouldn’t be on the fashion runway. It was also fun, at the old school (our teacher was so strict!) because we learnt how to write in copperplate handwriting and learnt how to draw with ink.

It was interesting to see how everyone used to speak and how our teacher would react if she heard or saw something that wouldn’t be said back then but probably would be said now eg. “ok”. It was very hard learning how the class of 1853 used to speak and how they used to write, it’s like a different language that you are learning about. In 1853 the teacher used to relate a lot to poems and because we were at a religious school it would be a lot about the personal learner attributes and being king to one another.

The children were treated very unfairly by teachers, parents and by anyone on the street. And in the other hand rarely people would be nice to children because apparently they should be seen and not heard. I also feel bad for the children because there ears wouldn’t be good from the gunshots and they saw a lot of people dead, which is bad because most of them didn’t even know what was going on because they were around from ages 0-7, which was when you were classified as a kid, you used to get married at ages 8-13, and you used to have kids at the ages 14+. It wasn’t fair that you had to get a job to have enough money to survive instead of getting a good education.

At camp we went to a sound and light show called ‘aura’. I learnt a lot from the 3D room and the whole show, it was incredible, apart from the fact the it was totally freezing, but, we all put up with it just fine. When we went to the first room it was the 3D room and it taught us all about space and basically what happened to earth, Then we hopped on to a vehicle that took as to this projection show that was at a lake, It was based a lot on animals, then we walked to this theatre and it was all closed until the screen opened and it turned into a play about the eureka hotel and the Eureka stockade. The sound and light show was really fun and educational and something I would do again.

Overall camp was so fun and very interesting. I recommend going to sovereign hill, because not only you can say you have been there but you can say you were standing on top of where the eureka stockade was built!

Have you been to Sovereign hill? If so would you recommend it to people that haven’t been?
